Brisas del Mogotón is located in San Fernando, Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua, and is managed by Bayardo Jimenez and his 3 brothers: Marvin, Ramón, and Lenny. They are all second-generation coffee producers who took it upon on themselves the duty of growing their family’s business. The farm sits at an elevation of 1,650 m.a.s.l. and consists of 210 hectares, of which 30 Ha are planted with coffee. Located in the skirts of Cerro Mogoton, this farm is neighbor to the highest mountain in all of Nicaragua.
They start this Maracaturra Natural lot by hand picking and hand selecting the ripest cherries. No fermentation is done on this lot, so next step in the process is drying the cherries in African Beds for around 25-30 days, with constant movement to ensure a uniform drying process, until it reaches 10-11% humidity.
Bayardo and his brothers inherited their family’s farm 16 years ago and ever since have been at the forefront of the business. They learned the craft from their father, when he ventured into coffee-farming by buying Brisas del Mogoton.
Nowadays, Brisas del Mogoton has become a literal haven for native species and water springs. Bayardo and his family took pride in the land in which their farm stood and turned it into a Natural Reserve, where more than 85% of the land (or 180 Ha) count towards it!
We met this incredible family in one of our travels to Nicaragua, where we were stunned by their great understanding of the coffee value chain, and their environmental consciousness. Aside from Maracaturra, they also grow the following varieties: Red and Yellow Catuai, Villa Sarchi, Pacamara, and Bourbon. The plan is to also implementing more exotic varieties like Geisha and Ethiopian Heirlooms in the coming years. This is our first year working with this family and we are extremely excited about future harvests!
