Brumas del Zurquà Micromill
Beneficio Brumas del Zurquà is a family-run micromill situated in Costa Rica’s Central Valley, within the Heredia sub-region. The mill receives ripe cherries from neighboring farms and processes a diverse range of varieties, including Villa Sarchi, SL-28, Bourbon, Gesha, Typica, Caturra, and Orange Bourbon.
The operation is led by Juan Ramón Alvarado RodrÃguez and his family, who represent the fourth generation of coffee producers in their lineage. Since the early 2000s, particularly around the 2003–2004 harvests, they have focused on innovation in processing and significant investment in infrastructure, developing facilities such as a cupping laboratory and on-site roastery to maintain strict quality control and consistency.
In recent years, Brumas del Zurquàhas faced challenges stemming from labor shortages, caused both by the pandemic and the migration of local workers seeking opportunities abroad. Despite these obstacles, Juan remains deeply committed to his craft. He takes pride in having built a thriving family business that generates local employment and fosters positive social and economic impact in his community.
Juan’s philosophy toward coffee is one of joy and purpose. He encourages roasters who work with his coffees to roast with intention—to greet each day motivated, optimistic, and ready for new experiences. His hope is that the care and passion infused at Brumas del Zurquà travel seamlessly through the entire coffee journey, from seed to cup.
