Finca El Bosque is located in Vereda San Carlos, Urrao, Antioquia, Colombia, and is managed by Edgar León Moreno, a 45‑year‑old fourth‑generation coffee producer. The farm spans 7.23 hectares at 2,050 m.a.s.l., where Edgar grows Chiroso (26,500 trees), Caturra (5,500 trees), and Geisha (1,500 trees).
Edgar’s washed process begins with selective harvesting, with the help of women from the vereda. The cherries are floated and undergo a double fermentation: first in baskets overnight, then after depulping, a second fermentation in open stainless steel tanks for 70 hours. The parchment is then washed in channels and laid to dry in marquesinas for approximately 20 – 25 days, depending on the weather.
Edgar is originally from Betulia, where coffee runs deep in his family tradition. He bought Finca El Bosque in 2017 and moved to Urrao to pursue his passion for quality, but his story in Urrao began way earlier, working as an extensionist in the region.
In 2007, during a training mission with local producers (teaching them about proper drying techniques and specialty coffee), Edgar encountered a variety that stood out. At first, others called it a Caturra, but Edgar knew it was different… That variety was Chiroso. He recognized its potential before it had a name, and from there, the rest is history.
His discovery, alongside the work of producer Carmen Cecilia Montoya (Doña Carmen), helped put Urrao and Chiroso on the specialty coffee map. Today, Edgar continues to refine his craft with the same curiosity and dedication that first led him to this exceptional variety.
