Finca El Recuerdo is located in San Agustín, Huila, Colombia, and managed by Rafael Hoyos, a 44-year-old, second-generation coffee grower. The farm consists of 2.5 hectares of land and sits at an elevation of 1,850 m.a.s.l, with around 3,000 coffee trees in production of the Caturra, Pink Bourbon and Catimore varieties.

Rafael starts his lot by carefully handpicking the ripest of cherries and removing all floaters, leaving the cherries in sealed plastic barrels to dry ferment for 72 hours. The cherries are then depulped and fermented again in sealed barrels for up to 60 hours, before washing the parchment with low water and laying them to dry in open patios. Depending on the weather, the drying stage can take up to 3 weeks, with constant movement until it reaches 10% humidity.

Keeping His Father’s Legacy

Rafael grew up in the region, learning to work the land from a young age. Finca El Recuerdo has been his family’s ancestral home for two generations, and in 2020 was his turn to manage it.
Every family member helps around the farm, with land management, harvesting, processing and even sales!

Aside from coffee, his farm also grows cassava, plantain and corn – And there’s also a protected reserve within the farm.
We have been working with Rafael and Finca El Recuerdo since 2023, and we excited to continuing building relationship!
