Finca La Mata de Guadua, from Urrao, Antioquia

Finca La Mata de Guadua is located in Vereda Aguacates, Urrao, Antioquia, Colombia, and is managed by Juan Pablo Zapata, alongside his brother Alex and their father. The farm spans 20 hectares at 2,100 m.a.s.l., where the family cultivates Chiroso (9,000 trees, with another 3,000 in development) and Geisha (700 trees).

The family uses the “cochadas” method: they harvest cherries as ripe as possible, depulp the same day, and ferment for 5 to 6 days in concrete tanks with minimal water. After washing, the coffee is dried in a marquesina for 10 to 15 days, depending on the weather.

A Family Craft

The Zapata family originally comes from Betulia, Antioquia, where their father was born. They moved to Urrao over thirty years ago to improve their livelihood and grow more coffee, although at one point they removed some to plant avocado. And that is how Finca La Mata de Guadua came to be, a mix of inheritance and land purchased over the years, and managed by father and sons.

The name “La Mata de Guadua” comes from the abundant guadua bamboo growing on the property. In addition to coffee, the farm produces avocados, plantains, and bananas for shade. Juan Pablo has noticed that coffee thrives under banana shade, and he plans to plant more coffee and bananas with this dual purpose in mind.

We began working with Juan Pablo and Finca La Mata de Guadua in 2026, and we are excited to keep building this relationship.
