Finca Las Cumbres is located in Limay, Estelí, Nicaragua, and is run by Walter Jose Picada Perez. The farm sits at an elevation of 1,200 m.a.sl on average and consists of approximately 350 manzanas in total, where he grows mostly Caturra, and in less quantity Catimore and Yellow Bourbon.
To produce this quality, they maintain quality agricultural practices, proper fertilization schedules, and a plan to prevent diseases often found within coffee plantations; all of this while taking into account the preservation of the environment. His Washed coffee starts by harvesting the ripest cherries and floating them, for later de-pulping and thoroughly washing it; Walter then takes his coffee to Beneficio Las Segovias, where he dries his parchment until it reaches 12% humidity, bringing that sweet Caturra profile to surface.
Walter’s grandfather initially purchased the farm, buying more land over time. Walter, who also runs the farm with his three brothers and mother, is now the third generation to work this land.
Finca Las Cumbres was chosen as one of the regional winners of B2B Nicaragua in 2019, which makes Walter feel proud that the fruits of his labor are being recognized on an international level. However, Walter recognizes that his success is nothing without the workers on the farm who help contribute to the production of coffee and he even pays higher than standard wages, as well as lending money without interest rates to some of the workers who also produce coffee.
This support that he lends to the community is really important as many of these workers’ main incomes are off the land and the standard interest rates that they can find elsewhere are so high, that they eat into basically all of their profits.
We met Walter though our relationship with Beneficio Las Segovias, where he dries and mills his coffees. This is our 4th year working with Walter’s Coffee and we look forward to future harvests!
