Finca Las Mañanitas, from Urrao, Antioquia.
Finca Las Mañanitas is located in the “vereda” Los Aguacates in Urrao, Antioquia, Colombia, and is managed by Juan Danilo Florez, a 42-year-old, second-generation coffee grower, along with his family. The farm consists of 14 hectares of land, with 4 hectares dedicated to growing coffee. It sits at an elevation of 2,010 m.a.s.l, with around 12,000 coffee trees in production of the Chiroso and Catimor varieties.
Juan Danilo works with the “cochadas” processing method, which involves handpicking cherries each day, leaving them in cherry for one day and then de-pulping the next day, on top of the prior days batch. The coffee is then all washed together on Monday of the next week (which lots having between 2-6 days of fermentation. Upon washing, the coffee is placed to dry in parabolic driers for around 8 – 10 days, depending on the weather.

Juan Danilo and his family became coffee growers, almost by obligation. Before coffee, they used to grow tomatoes and lulo, but the heavy pesticide applications that entailed the craft were taking a toll on everyone’s health. This led them to switch to coffee, which they saw as less invasive, and in that process, fell in love with craft.
Jose Danilo’s sons (26, 24, and 22) all help in the farm, each with a different task such as harvesting, post-harvesting, and land upkeep. Aside from coffee, the farm has milk cattle and a few lime trees.
We started working with Jose Danilo and Finca Las Mañanitas in 2024, and their approach to coffee growing is something to admire.
