Finca Nuevo Horizonte, from Santa María, Huila.
Finca Nuevo Horizonte is located in Santa María, Huila, Colombia, and is managed by Elmer Sarmiento, a 44-year-old, third-generation coffee grower. The farm consists of 2.5 hectares of land, sitting at an elevation of 2,000 masl. With over 7,000 coffee trees, Don Elmer grows the incredible Pink Bourbon, Colombia, and Caturra varieties, with some new Chiroso trees underway!
Elmer keeps his processing simple – Upon harvesting, the cherries are left in bags for 24 hours before being depulped. The parchments is then placed in sealed plastic barrels for up to 80 hours, left to rest and submerged in water to remove some of the mucilage. The coffee is then laid to dry in raised beds for 15 to 18 days, depending on the weather.
Coffee is his Horizon.
Elmer grew up surrounded by coffee tradition, and has been everything he has ever known. In a region where opportunities are scarce, he clinged to coffee in order rise above.
He bought Finca Nuevo Horizonte in 2004, with a loan he started paying with each crop’s profits. For him, the farm meant a “New Horizon”, an opportunity for him and his family.
He started to hear word of Specialty Coffee in 2019, and got curious, eventually meeting with us in our Buying Station. His quality has been on par year after year, always expanding. We have been working together with Elmer and Finca Nuevo Horizonte since 2019, and each year they get us excited about what lies ahead!
