Finca Santa Helena is located in Vereda Los Andes, Santa María, Huila, Colombia, and is managed by Ricardo Velandia, a 32‑year‑old third‑generation coffee producer. The farm spans 4 hectares, with 3 hectares dedicated to coffee at 1,900 m.a.s.l., where Ricardo grows Pink Bourbon, Bourbon Aji, Wush Wush, Tabi, Colombia, and recently Catigua across approximately 7,500 trees.
Ricardo’s process begins with selective harvesting of ripe cherries, which are fermented whole in sealed bags for 36 hours. After depulping, the coffee is lightly washed and dried in a marquesina for up to 14 days, depending on the weather.
Ricardo comes from a coffee-growing family. His parents and grandparents worked the land before him, but there was a time he doubted that coffee was his calling. As a young man, he moved away to study software development, building a career in a very different field. But in 2019, he heard about specialty coffee and decided to give it a try on his father’s farm. Applying the same curiosity and discipline he used in coding, he began experimenting with fermentation and processing.
Ricardo approaches fermentation with the same curiosity and discipline as coding, he says… through trial, error, and constant refinement.
In 2024, inspired by his progress and passion, he took the leap and purchased his own farm, Finca Santa Helena, where he now cultivates an impressive range of exotic varieties.
We began working with Ricardo and Finca Santa Helena in 2024, and we are excited to keep building this relationship.
