Futureproof Coffee Uganda is an RVO-backed collaboration between Dutch and Ugandan coffee value chain partners. Our mission is to secure the future of Ugandan coffee producers through targeted training and projects that address three core challenges: ecological degradation, underpayment, and gender inequality. In equipping farmers with sustainable farming techniques and business opportunities, we are fostering a resilient and future-proof coffee sector in Uganda.
The Project kicked off with an Implementation Phase in 2023, when The Coffee Quest worked with its local partners, Brand Farm and UCFA, and two producing cooperatives (Kitenga and Kanseera) around Mubende, to plan interventions for long-term impact.
With a focus on empowering women and youth entrepreneurs in regenerative farming practices, organic input production, and beekeeping, the project aims to address both environmental and socio-economic challenges affecting Uganda’s Robusta coffee producers.
Our impact efforts focus on three key areas:
Providing opportunities for women to participate in the coffee value chain, gain financial independence, and access training. Women are often excluded from key decision-making processes in the coffee sector, and we aim to change that by promoting equal opportunities.
The Challenge: Coffee yield and flavour complexity depend on healthy soil and stable weather conditions. However, Uganda’s coffee sector faces severe threats due to climate change, drought, deforestation, and chemical overuse, leading to high soil acidity and declining productivity.
Our Approach:
– 50+ Youth and Lead farmers trained in organic production of compost, fertilisers, herbicides, and pesticides to be distributed over and applied by the 950 farmers of Kitenga and Kanseera cooperative by 3+ youth enterprises.
– Regenerative farming and agroforestry practices implemented on our demonstration and cooperative farms support coffee cultivation by feeding soil with nutritious microorganisms from crop diversification.
The Challenge: Although women contribute 70% of labour in coffee production, men dominate marketing and financial decision-making. Women rarely own land, limiting their participation in cooperatives and access to training.
Our Approach:
– 50% female-leadership in our youth enterprises
– At least 20 beehives distributed to female cooperative members to generate independent income
– All youth enterprises to partake in GALS training to foster gender equality in business and private speheres
The Challenge: With over 1.7 million Ugandan households relying on coffee as their primary income, many smallholder farmers (owning less than one acre of land) struggle to make a sustainable living due to price fluctuations, lack of market access, and limited income diversification.
Our Approach:
Reduced out-cost for food items as home-production of food and cash crops implemented into agroforestry system, with project-wide target to plant at least:
– 50 macadamia trees
– 1,000 vanilla vines
– 10 fruit trees
– 10 indigenous trees and cover crops
– 3+ Youth Enterprises generating additional non-coffee income through production, processing and selling of honey, organic inputs and mushrooms on both local and national market
– 12 Lead Farmers trained in organic input production to expand sustainable practices across cooperatives.
This project aligns with key UN Sustainable Development Goals:
By empowering farmers with the knowledge, tools, and resources to thrive, Futureproof Coffee Uganda is creating a lasting impact on Uganda’s coffee industry.
