LavaCherry Rwenzori is produced in the mountainous region of Rwenzori, Uganda, at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 1,800 meters above sea level. This lot is cultivated by approximately 350 smallholder farmers who grow SL14 and SL28 varieties. The Rwenzori region is known for its nutrient-dense soil and favorable climate, with bi-annual rainy seasons followed by extended sunshine, providing ideal conditions for coffee cultivation.
LavaCherry Rwenzori stands out for its controlled fermentation and meticulous drying techniques, contributing to its vibrant and complex profile. Agri Evolve, our export partner, oversees the processing and sources cherries from smallholder farmers who harvest 5-10 kg daily.
The cherries are selectively harvested at peak ripeness, ensuring a dark red color before being delivered to Nyabirongo station. The coffee undergoes a natural process with a 48-hour fermentation period. It is then sun-dried on raised beds in thick layers, later spread out in thin layers with constant turning until fully dried. Once the drying process is complete, the beans are hulled, graded, and color-sorted before being packed for export. The drying process is carefully managed to preserve the beans’ distinct flavors. Coffee is stored in a dedicated warehouse on pallets, maintaining its quality before export.
Agri Evolve is a key player in Uganda’s specialty coffee sector, working closely with smallholder farmers to improve coffee quality, productivity, and sustainability. Established in the Rwenzori region, the company provides essential infrastructure, such as washing stations and drying facilities, ensuring that coffee is processed to the highest standards. Their commitment extends beyond coffee, as they support farmers with agricultural training, access to better tools, and financial literacy programs.
Agri Evolve also invests in community development initiatives, including clean water access, education programs, and environmental conservation projects. By fostering long-term partnerships with farmers, the company helps secure better incomes and stability for coffee-producing families. Their focus on innovation, quality control, and ethical sourcing makes them a trusted partner in bringing Uganda’s best coffee to the global market.
