Los Ocotes is a carefully crafted regional lot from Beneficio Las Segovias, located in Ocotal, Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua. This lot brings together the work of multiple smallholder producers and the Balladárez family’s own farms, notably Finca La Bendicion and Finca Un Regalo de Dios. The coffees are grown at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,700 meters above sea level, with varieties including Híbridos (H1, H2, H3), Red Catuaí, Marsellesa, Java, SL-34, Paraíso, and Caturra Estrella.
The lot is a blend of 95% washed and 5% honey process. For the washed component, cherries are depulped and undergo a 36‑hour anaerobic fermentation before washing. The honey process skips fermentation: cherries are passed through a siphon to remove light beans, then depulped and sent directly to drying. Drying takes approximately 18 days, using African beds for farm coffees and patios for coffee from other producers.
Beneficio Las Segovias is owned and operated by Luis Alberto Balladárez Moncada, a fourth‑generation coffee producer. Together with his wife Esperanza and their children (Cindy, Luis Gadiel, and María José) he runs the beneficio as a family enterprise. They purchased the property specifically to focus on high‑quality coffee production.
Named after the Ocote tree (an important native pine of the region), Los Ocotes reflects the Balladárez family’s commitment to quality and community. While their own farms (La Bendición and Un Regalo de Dios) contribute to the lot, the majority comes from neighboring smallholders whom they work with closely. The result is a consistent, approachable cup that represents the best of Nueva Segovia.
We began working with Beneficio Las Segovias and the Balladárez family in 2019, and we are excited to keep building this relationship.
