Mukangu Washed, from Murang’a, Kenya

The Mukangu Washed lot comes from the Mukangu Factory, part of the Ruchu Gacharage Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS) in Kangema, Murang’a County, Kenya. Murang’a is considered the birthplace of the Kikuyu community and is also famed as the origin of the Mau Mau uprising. The factory has approximately 800 active members, most cultivating less than one hectare of coffee intercropped with maize and beans. The farms sit at elevations between 1,650 and 1,850 m.a.s.l. on red volcanic soils, and the lot is composed of SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian varieties.

The processing follows a traditional Kenyan washed method. Farmers hand‑pick ripe cherries and deliver them to the factory, where they are sorted for ripeness and quality. The cherries are pulped, then fermented in tanks for 12 to 24 hours to break down the mucilage. After fermentation, the beans are washed in clean water channels and often soaked for an additional 12 to 24 hours to enhance its profile. The parchment is then sun‑dried on raised beds for two weeks, depending on the weather.

A Cooperative Rooted in History

Mukangu Factory was established in the 1970s and is one of five factories under Ruchu Gacharage FCS, alongside Ruona, Kahiga, Kamichee, and Ruchu. The cooperative’s main harvest runs from October to December, with an early crop between April and July. The region receives 1,200‑1,300 mm of rainfall annually, with long rains from March to May and short rains from October to December.

Mukangu Factory is sourced through Taylor Winch, a Kenyan miller and exporter with an extensive portfolio of commercial and specialty coffees. We work with Taylor Winch as part of our Auction Program, allowing us to select the best lots during our visits to Kenya.

We began working with Taylor Winch and the farmers of Gathiruini in 2026, and are really excited to keep building this relationship.
