Guatemala is one of the famous Latin-American coffee countries. From high altitudes, to colonial towns & estates, and a strong presence of Mayan natives. The country has much to offer for specialty lovers. Our first introduction to Guatemala where the leftovers on the cupping table from our friends at Dolce Alchemia who initiated contact with Manolo Murales from finca Las Delicias. We were sold in an instantly. The Murales family from Palencia have generations of growing experience, but always innovate to improve their processes; for example by using micro-organisms their soils, but also experimenting with new varieties and Greenhouse drying. In the same community we have identified other family run farms that combine coffee tradition with the adaption to new methods for producing specialty coffee.
In Huehuetenango, right on the border with Mexico, we have been able to do the same. A good example is El Zapote that won 2nd place in the 2018 Cup of Excellence, and with his help we can now offer a consistent signature blend of his Catuaí and Bourbon variety in our Classic segment. To work with smallholder farms we partnered up with De La Gente (“from the people”), an impact focused organization who works on the ground with 5 cooperatives across Guatemala. Their ambition stretches from quality production, to education and even tourism. Check out their Annual report on the DLG website.
