Fazenda Pedra Preta, owned by Eduardo Ferreira de Sousa and nestled in Mantiqueira de Minas, Brazil, are pioneers in regenerative agriculture through their commitment to the sustainable Tropicália agroforestry system. Spanning 4 hectares, with ambitious plans for a 100-hectare expansion within the next decade, the farm blends ecological preservation with modern technologies. Specializing in various specialty coffee blends, Fazenda Pedra Preta, guided by Eduardo’s dedication, consistently produces high-quality, export-grade coffee. Fazenda Pedra Preta sits at an elevation of 1150 m.a.s.l. where he cultivates a mix of varieties such as Mundo Novo, Arara, Catuai.

The natural process enhances the coffee’s microbiota, expressing terroir and variety uniquely. After pre-cleaning, the coffee undergoes a folding system on the concrete patio for initial days. Subsequently, a static dryer with intermittent drying maintains moisture homogeneity over two weeks at a maximum temperature of 35ºC. Post-drying, a 20-day storage period precedes the final batch cleaning, encapsulating Fazenda Pedra Preta’s meticulous and sustainable coffee production practices.

Scaling Regenerative Agriculture

Eduardo Ferreira de Sousa’s partnership with The Coffee Quest has strengthened their shared vision of scaling up regenerative agriculture and introducing it to the global coffee industry. Fazenda Pedra Preta represents over a century of coffee-growing tradition within the Capistrano-Ferreira family, with knowledge and heritage passed down through five generations. Eduardo combines this rich legacy with modern techniques and ecological preservation, fuelled by his Master’s Thesis on Agroforestry.

Since 2019, Eduardo has transformed his pilot farm from producing a small batch of specialty coffee to exporting full container volumes, establishing one of Brazil’s first agroforestry model farms. His pilot project, Tropicália, promotes land management using intercropping to create a scalable, multi-layered ecosystem.

In 2023, Eduardo launched Flora: a movement driving the ‘Regenerative Revolution’ through workshops on Landscape Recovery, Agroforestry, and regenerative farming, ongoing R&D on Fazenda Pedra Preta, a sustainable financing model, and an annual impact report. Flora Movement Partners support these endeavors, extending the impact of Eduardo’s regenerative farming practices.

Right now, Pedra Preta has turned into a demonstration farm, showcasing Eduardo’s latest project, Flora. Within five years, he has converted 400 hectares into agroforestry.

The Coffee Quest supports Eduardo’s goal of developing a scalable agroforestry system. Through their partnership, they assist Eduardo in maintaining quality consistency and preparing his farm for mechanized harvest and sorting. The premium-based model implemented by The Coffee Quest contributes €1/kg to support Eduardo’s agroforestry pilot.
