Santa Maria, our North Huila group lot, showcases the success of our partnership with the local community through our program “Productores del Futuro”. Despite the challenges posed by internal armed conflicts (guerrillas), our presence has enabled us to establish personal connections with farmers and support them in improving their coffee production. The farms contributing to it are located at an altitude between 1750 and 2150 m.a.s.l. The main varieties are Castillo, Pink bourbon, Caturro, Colombia, Typica.
Santa Maria group lot reaches a consistent 84 point-quality. To achieve this quality, producers meticulously select only ripe cherries, ferment them for 24 hours initially, and then for an additional 36-72 hours after de-pulping. The coffee is then washed and typically dried on patios. The profile of the Santa Maria lot showcases a balanced cup with soft plum and sweet citrus fruit notes. The potential of this flavour profile makes this a multi-purpose lot ideal for espresso or filter.
The Santa Maria group lot offers a beautiful clean cup, although it may be less complex compared to our 84+ lots. While this quality is commonly accepted at our regional station in Santa Maria, we prioritize consistency to provide added value. Each individual lot included in the “Santa Maria” group has undergone multiple cuppings and meets strict physical requirements, ensuring quality and consistency.
Led by Alberto Vaquiro, one of our dedicated Quality Coordinators, the Santa Maria team carefully selects and combines lots from farmers in the Huila region to create this exceptional group lot. Alberto, a talented cupper from a coffee farming family in Garzón, South Huila, brings innovation to traditional farmers, introducing methods like anaerobic fermentations. Over time, these farmers have embraced Alberto’s advice, witnessing improvements in their coffee’s quality and cupping scores.
The Coffee Quest Colombia is deeply committed to the community of Santa Maria, actively working to improve their living conditions. We have identified their challenges and implemented programs like “Productores del Futuro” to establish direct and stable relationships with small-scale producers. Our goal extends beyond fair prices and economic bonuses; we empower farmers with tools to enhance their coffee’s quality and create social programs that provide better opportunities for their families.
Through our local presence and outreach initiatives, we aim to uplift the community and make a positive impact on their lives.
