Sidama Natural G2, from Bensa, Ethiopia

The Sidama Natural G2 lot comes from Sagara Station, located in the Bensa area of Sidama, Ethiopia, and managed by Asefa Dukamo Korma. Coffee is sourced from several nearby villages, including Sagara, Dembi, Sagara Tena Tabiya, Murshano Finchawa, Damba, Fardano, Lamala, and Batala. Over 171 committed farmers contribute cherries of the 74158 variety here, and their farms sit in a range of 1,900 to 2,100 m.a.s.l.

For this Natural process, cherries are dried whole slowly. As soon as the cherries arrive, they are spread across the station’s 134 drying beds, where they dry for 14 to 16 days, depending on the weather, with careful turning and monitoring to ensure even moisture reduction.

Temporary Houses, Permanent Roots

Even though 1,900–2,100 m.a.s.l. of elevation sounds staggering, Sagara Station is actually on the lower side as far as coffee growing in the region goes. The sunny climate and surrounding vegetation create ideal conditions for slow, even drying, allowing the natural process to develop the fruit-forward character that defines this lot. The name Sagara means “temporary house” or “booth,” reflecting the area’s cultural roots and traditional practices.

Established in 1996 as producers, Daye Bensa has lived through all the turmoils that coffee growing and exporting entail in the region. Nowadays, they are a reference of excellence and resilience in Ethiopia and work with various communities of out-growers from whom they receive cherries. They work with multiple washing stations in the Bensa, Sidama area, including some that they own.

In addition to Sagara, since 2020 we have worked with some of their other washing stations, notably Keramo, Bombe, and Hamasho in the Sidama region, as well as Udesa Fora in Guji. Daye Bensa is no stranger to quality and has learned how to produce high-quality coffees: in 2020, they won 7th place in the COE, in 2021 8th place, and in 2022, 2nd place!

We are proud to partner with Daye Bensa and the farmers of Sagara Station, bringing this natural Ethiopian lot from Sidama Bensa to your roastery.
