Sitio Monte Santo, from Minas Gerais, Brazil
Sitio Monte Santo is located in Carmo do Rio Claro, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and is managed by Artilles Vilela, a 28-year-old, third-generation coffee grower. The farm consists of 12 Ha of coffee, sitting at an elevation of 1,050 m.a.s.l., and with around 4,000 coffee trees in production of the Maragogype variety.
This Natural lot starts its processing by picking and floating the cherries and leaving them to dry ferment in sealed tanks for up to 8 days. The cherries are then placed to dry in open patios for 15 to 20 days, depending on the weather, and constant movement throughout the day to ensure an even drying phase.
Rooted In Coffee
Artilles comes from a family rooted in coffee; he’s been involved in all stages of farm production since the age of 14, even commercialization. But it was under his management (which began in 2018) that they shifted their efforts towards Specialty Coffee, winning their first local recognition just the year after, in 2019.
Since then, he’s always seeking to improve his cup quality through education, knowledge sharing and technical assistance; one example is help received from Senar (National Rural Learning Service). Sitio Monte Santo is a small farm, with an annual production of 300 bags of commercial coffee and 100 bags of specialty coffee. In both scenarios, the harvesting is done by all members of the family manually.
