Victor Dota is a 43-year-old first-generation coffee farmer located in Saraguro, Loja, Ecuador. His farm consists of 4 Ha of land, sits at an elevation of 1,900 m.a.s.l, and has around 400 coffee trees of the Typica Mejorado variety (Only 0,5 Ha cultivated, and working on planting more!).
Victor begins this washed lot by picking the ripest cherries, which he then floats to remove any under/over-ripes. He then leaves the cherries on the hopper for 24 hours, de-pulps them, and soft-washes the wet parchment. The wet parchment is then left submerged in open tanks for an additional 24 hours prior to its final wash. Victor does not own drying beds, so he rents the space from his neighbor, which takes from 10 to 15 days, depending on the weather.
Victor began his coffee journey 3 years ago (2022, this is quite literally his first crop!). He learned a lot from his neighbor Don Abel Salinas, and he actually got the Typica Mejorado seeds from him. Before growing coffee, he used to grow short-cycle crops such as onions, legumes and others for the local market, and he also lent his labor as a worker on other farms in the area.
His coffe production just started but quality is already on the high-end, which goes to show the passion and perseverence of Victor!
It was through Capamaco that we met Victor, and we have been working with his coffee since 2024!
