The Derara Natural lot comes from Derara Station, located in the highlands of Uraga, Guji, Ethiopia, at elevations ranging from 2,020 to 2,220 m.a.s.l. The station is owned and run by Asefa Dukamo Korma and serves around 800 smallholder farmers from the surrounding Uraga area, who deliver cherries of the 74158 variety.
The coffee is processed as a Natural. Fully ripe cherries are hand-selected and delivered to Derara Station, where they are carefully sorted. The cherries are then spread on raised beds and dried under the sun, with regular turning to ensure even drying, for up to 22 days, depending on the weather.
The name Derara means “flower rising” in Sidamic, which feels adecuate for such a fertile and rich region in the Ethiopian coffee lands.
Established in 1996 as producers, Daye Bensa has lived through all the turmoils that coffee growing and exporting entail in the region. Nowadays, they are a reference of excellence and resilience in Ethiopia and work with various communities of out-growers from whom they receive cherries. They work with multiple washing stations in the Guji and Sidama areas, including some that they own. Daye Bensa is no stranger to quality and has learned how to produce high-quality coffees: in 2020, they won 7th place in the COE, in 2021 8th place, and in 2022, 2nd place!
We are proud to partner with Daye Bensa and the farmers of Derara Station, bringing this natural Ethiopian lot from the highlands of Uraga to your roastery.
