Finca El Guamal is located in Urrao, Antioquia, Colombia, and managed by Juan José Figueroa, a 25-year-old, second-generation coffee grower. The farm consists of 12 hectares of land and sits at an elevation of 1,900 m.a.s.l, with around 1,000 coffee trees in production of the Chiroso variety.
Juan José processes his coffee by harvesting the ripest cherries and leaving them to dry ferment overnight in open tanks. Cherries are then de-pulped and placed in sealed barrels to ferment for an additional 4-5 days, after which the parchment is washed and dried on raised beds for up to 18 days, depending on the weather.
Juan José Figueroa started his own coffee farm in 2020, when he was 21 years old. With encouragement from his family, he bought his own piece of land and dove straight into coffee, with added value always in mind.
He also produces avocados on his farm, and is always on the lookout for ways to earn additional income and improve the quality of coffee to sell for a more favorable price.
At 25 years old, Juan José is one of the youngest producers we work with in Urrao, and we hope to see others follow suit! We have been working with Juan Jose and Finca El Guamal since 2024, and his vision and thoughtfulness has us wanting more.
