The Hamasho Borena lot comes from Hamasho Washed Station, owned and managed by Asefa Dukamo Korma, it sits nestled in the Bombe Mountains of Sidama Bensa, Ethiopia, near the Oromia border. The station serves 161 smallholder farmers from the villages of Bombe Chilaka, Hamasho kebele (Hamasho Borena), and Keramo. Their farms sit at one of the highest elevations for coffee in Ethiopia… 2,300 to 2,400 m.a.s.l. on rich volcanic soil, where the primary variety is JARC 74158, along with other JARC varieties like 74112 and 74110.
For this Anaerobic Washed lot, ripe cherries are hand‑picked by farmers and delivered to the Hamasho Station, where they are floated and sorted for density and defects. The cherries are depulped and then go through an anaerobic fermentation for 72 hours, before being washed with abundant water. The parchment is the laid to dry on raised beds for 10-13 days, with continuous moisture checks throughout the day.
Hamasho Borena’s extreme elevation, combined with the sunny climate, volcanic soils, and dense vegetation of the Bombe mountain range, creates a microclimate unlike any other. Cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures allow cherries to develop slowly, concentrating sugars and increasing density.
Established in 1996 as producers, Daye Bensa has lived through all the turmoils that coffee growing and exporting entail in the region. Nowadays, they are a reference of excellence and resilience in Ethiopia and work with various communities of out‑growers from whom they receive cherries. They work with multiple washing stations in the Bensa, Sidama area, including some that they own.
In addition to Hamasho Borena, since 2020 we have worked with some of their other washing stations, notably Keramo, Bombe, and Udesa Fora in Guji, as well as Osolo in Guji. Daye Bensa is no stranger to quality and has learned how to produce high‑quality coffees: in 2020, they won 7th place in the COE, in 2021 8th place, and in 2022, 2nd place!
We are proud to partner with Daye Bensa and the farmers of Hamasho Station, bringing this exceptional washed Ethiopian lot from the Bombe Mountains to your roastery.
