Las Guas is brought to you from Paltas, Loja, Ecuador, by Felix Capa Valdivieso and his son-in-law, William Miguel Celi. They manage the farm together, but each owns their own lots. The farm consists of 3 hectares of land and 2 hectares of Forest Reserve, sitting at an elevation of 1,850 m.a.s.l, where they grow 700 trees of Typica (Criollo), 800 trees of Caturra and 3,000 trees of Yellow Catucai
All their coffee is processed the same way in the wet mill; they leave the coffee for 24 hours in cherry, de-pulp it, and then dry ferment for another 30-36 hours. After washing the coffees, they are dried in a greenhouse structure for between 10-12 days.
The farm originally belonged to Felix (now 65 years old) who describes himself as someone who has always been a “coffee fanatic”. However, for many years, he was unmotivated to produce coffee due to the low prices. In 2012, the local Ministry of Agriculture made a big push to improve production and quality in Loja and he even joined an Association or Producer Group that offered Fair Trade and Organic certification (offering him higher prices compared to conventional coffee).
Felix soon learned that he could receive an even higher pay by focusing on quality and since 2017, has been working with Capamaco Trading to commercialize his coffee at specialty prices. Over the years he has regained the passion he originally had for coffee!
In addition to the great variety of fruits and vegetables that they grow, they have many native shade trees that can be found within the coffee and in the reserve such as Oak, Cinnamon, and Guama (which also produces fruit)! And with forest reserve, comes many native (and mostly native) animals to the region such as crested guan, European badger, armadillo, ocelot, and sparrow hawks. While we’ve been working in Loja for years, 2023 will mark our second time working with Felix and William and we are thrilled for harvests to come!
