Finca Don Pancho is located in the community of El Cielito, Santa Bárbara, Honduras, and is run by Alberto Portillo. He is a coffee producer by tradition and an important part of Beneficio San Vicente’s specialty coffee program. The farm is approximately 4.5 Ha and sits at an elevation of 1,450 m.a.s.l, where he grows Geisha and Parainema varieties… around 12,000 trees in production in total.
Alberto’s process starts by handpicking and selecting the ripest cherries and then floating and de-pulping them that same afternoon. It is then dry-fermented for between 15 hours, washed, and placed to dry on raised beds. Depending on the weather, the drying process lasts from 10 to 16 days, really reaffirming the Honduran terroir.
Alberto Portillo is a third generation coffee grower, and Finca Don Pancho is the result of family effort. He learned the craft from his Father, Roberto Portillo, and dedicated his mornings to studying and his afternoons to the craft.
He graduated in 2012 and temporarily focused on other ventures while his Father stayed at the farm, althought he always stayed involved, often extending a helping hand to his father on the business side of the farm. However in 2021, due to financial reasons, Alberto migrated to the US… but continues working with his Father virtually.
We discovered Alberto and Roberto’s farm thanks to Beneficio San Vicente and their Specialty Coffee Program initiative, which started years ago. We resonated with Beneficio San Vicente and their model of transparency and decided to work with them to help grow Specialty Coffee in Honduras since 2023!
