Finca La Hormiga is located in vereda Horizonte, Santa María, Huila, Colombia, and is managed by José Norbey Vargas, a second-generation coffee producer. The farm spans 2 hectares at 1,800 m.a.s.l., where José cultivates Pink Bourbon (7,000 trees) and has a new lot of Geisha on the way.
José’s process begins with selective harvesting of ripe cherries, followed by floating and sorting. After depulping, the parchment ferments for 20 hours in tanks, and is then washed and dried in a marquesina for 10 to 12 days, depending on the weather.
José grew up learning coffee from his father, with roots in Huila between Palermo and Santa María. He works alongside his father and brother, dividing tasks to manage their production efficiently. They began cultivating coffee nine years ago, but it was four years ago (after hearing from neighbors about the profitability of specialty coffee) that they shifted their focus to quality.
We began working with José and Finca La Hormiga in 2026, and we are excited to keep building this relationship.
