Gichathaini Factory is nestled in the red volcanic soils of Nyeri County, in Kenya’s former Central Province, about 150 kilometers north of Nairobi. Sitting at an altitude of 1,700 to 1,800 meters above sea level, it benefits from rich organic soil and consistent rainfall of approximately 1,200 to 1,400 mm annually.
The factory is part of the Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society, which also includes Ndaroini and Kangocho factories. Around 900 active members deliver their cherries to Gichathaini, contributing to an annual production of about 685 metric tons from roughly 450 hectares of coffee land. The main harvest takes place between October and December, with smaller volumes harvested from April to July. The farmers cultivate a mix of Ruiru 11, SL 28, and SL 34 varieties, all fully washed at the factory.
The Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society, to which Gichathaini belongs, plays a vital role in ensuring transparency and farmer representation. Each factory under Gikanda has a representative who participates in decision-making at the cooperative level, fostering collective responsibility and shared progress.
The name “Gichathaini” comes from the Kikuyu word muchatha, a medicinal plant (Vernonia auriculifera) found abundantly in the area. This deep connection to the land reflects the factory’s integration with local culture and community.
Nyeri County itself holds historical significance, tracing its name back to colonial times. In 1902, British forces attempted to establish control in the region, setting up a post near Mount Kenya on a hill known by the Kikuyu as Kia-Nyiri. Despite resistance from Kikuyu warriors, this hill eventually became the center of the current Nyeri County. The combination of historical richness, favorable altitude, ideal rainfall, and farmer commitment makes Gichathaini Factory a standout contributor to Kenya’s specialty coffee landscape.
