Ibutiti Estate, managed by Mercy Wambui Gatuhi, is a prominent coffee farm located in the Kiria-ini sublocation of Gatanga, Murang’a County, Kenya. Established in 1978 by Mr. William Gatuhi Murathe, the farm thrives at an elevation of 1750-1800 meters, benefiting from deep red volcanic soils rich in organic matter. The estate primarily grows the Ruiru 11 variety.
During peak seasons, up to 400 local workers are hired to hand-pick cherries at peak ripeness. The cherries are then brought to the wet mill, where they are spread out on a patio for sorting. After sorting, the cherries are funneled into a pulping machine, where clean water helps remove the outer fruit. The beans are then fermented overnight, washed thoroughly, and sorted by density. Finally, they are sun-dried on raised tables, monitored closely until they reach the optimal moisture level.
Ibutiti Estate is not just a coffee farm but a symbol of resilience and community spirit. Following the loss of her husband, Mercy Wambui Gatuhi has continued to lead the farm with dedication, involving her children and grandchildren in daily operations, which not only preserves the family legacy but also instills a deep connection to the land and its produce. The estate operates under GAWA Company, a name that embodies the values of sharing and community work. This ethos is evident in the farm’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, where proceeds from coffee sales are used to sponsor children’s education, and pruned wood is donated to the elderly for cooking and warmth.
The estate’s coffee, known for its vibrant citrus flavors, black currant notes, and rich chocolate undertones, has earned recognition in various competitions, including being ranked number one in Murang’a County. The processing of the coffee is done with great care, from hand-picking the cherries to sun-drying the parchment coffee on raised tables. The meticulous attention to detail ensures that the coffee meets the highest standards before being transported to the dry mill. Harvesting at Ibutiti Estate occurs primarily between October and December, with a smaller early crop harvested between April and July. Through its dedication to quality and community, Ibutiti Estate continues to produce exceptional coffee that embodies the rich heritage of Murang’a County.
