Iron Lion, from the Guji Zone in Ethiopia
Due to the great succes of our fruit Iron Lion g3 and g2 profiles from Sidama Bensa, we decided to also launch an Iron Lion from Guji. This community lot is the result of our collaboration with The King of Guji, Ture Waji, and his vertical integration project Mayole Coffee. Together, we focus on cup profile consistency and quality. Iron Lion seeks to fulfil popular demands in winey and expressive Ethiopian Natural Coffee with loads of berries, Cacao, and price efficiency in mind. We created the lot by selecting top grade 2 natural lots from various washing stations and blending them to achieve yearly consistent profiling. This coffee grows at an altitude of around 2000-2200 m.a.s.l. The varieties used for this lot are 74158,74110,75112.
This natural lot is made from well selected, ripe cherries. The cherries are floated upon reception to remove any low quality cherries, then dried on African beds for 14 to 18 days. The cherries are locally hulled into unsorted natural beans.
Iron Lion & the King of Guji’s Mayole Coffee
Michiel Lampers, responsible for sourcing Ethiopian lots at The Coffee Quest, grew up enjoying Reggae music and has a deep interest in sociology and history. The name Iron Lion is inspired by Bob Marley’s song “Iron Lion Zion,” which references Rastafarian beliefs. In the song, Zion symbolises Ethiopia, and the lion represents the Lion of Judah, a symbol on the old Ethiopian flag associated with Haile Selassie. Selassie, considered the Messiah by Rastafarians, fought for independence, progress, and peace, laying the foundation for the end of colonial slavery and the creation of a democratic constitution. This makes Iron Lion a truly rebel coffee!
Ture Waji, founder of Sookoo Coffee, has deep ties to the Guji region of Ethiopia. He started his brand in 2018, building drying stations in Uraga and Shakiso. Sookoo Coffee currently produces only natural coffees but plans to introduce washed coffees in the future. They educate farmers on good agricultural practices and provide pre-harvest loans. Sookoo Coffee has a ‘woman-first’ policy at washing stations, built a school for children, and improved local infrastructure.
We first met Ture Waji on our very first trip to Ethiopia, and we were immediately impressed by his company’s values and mission to produce high-quality, traceable, and sustainable coffee. We had the opportunity to taste his coffees for the first time on the last day of our trip and were blown away by their deliciousness. We have now worked with Ture for three years, and we are thrilled for upcoming harvests. We believe in the exciting projects he has in the works, including producing washed coffees at his current washing stations, venturing into new regions within Guji, and separating out single farmer lots.
