Mukunga Estate is located in the Githunguri subregion of Kiambu County, Kenya, surrounded by the scenic Aberdare forest. The estate lies between 1,800 and 1,850 meters above sea level, in the coffee‑tea transition zone. Soils are red volcanic and well‑drained, with reliable bimodal rainfall exceeding 1,400 mm per year (long rains March–May, short rains October–December). The estate was started in 1970, and approximately 90% of the trees are older varieties, with 10% newer plantings. The lot is processed as a Washed coffee.
Selectively handpicked cherries are de-pulped, then dry‑fermented for 24 hours in open tanks before being washed, and submerged in clean water for another 24 hours. The wet parchment is then dried on raised beds for 10 to 18 days, depending on the weather.
Mukunga Estate is owned by Hanner Wanjiku Mukunga. The property is nestled close to the Aberdare mountain range, an area well known for specialty coffee and tea. The region is rich in biodiversity, including snakes, deer, hares, weaverbirds, owls, hawks, and indigenous trees such as fig, cordia, croton, and neem. Farmers are encouraged to preserve these native species.
